Geopraevent participated in the 6th Interdisciplinary workshop on rockfall protection from 22 – 24 May 2017 in Barcelona, Spain. RocExs is the international network of rockfall experts and brings together scientists, engineers, practitioners, decision makers and end-users every three years. The workshop aims to present, discuss and evaluate new methods, models and approaches in rockfall analysis and management.

Geopraevent CEO Lorenz Meier presented our recently launched rockfall radar solution for real-time rockfall detection by Doppler radar. He explained the differences between existing radar technologies applied in monitoring, i.e. Gb-InSAR (ground-based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and Doppler radar, and demonstrated results from the test site in Brinzauls including video footage. Moreover, he presented the range of new possible applications with the rockfall radar and answered various questions asked by the interested audience.

The workshop further included a fieldtrip on rockfall risk management in the Montserrat massif that hosts the world-famous sanctuary. The spectacularly located sanctuary attracts up to 2.4 million visitors per year and the surrounding natural park is a popular spot for outdoor activities. However, rockfall events are frequent at this historical site and the access road, railway and funicular. The field trip organizers illustrated rockfall hazard and risk characteristics, presented their work in rock face monitoring and showed examples of rockfall protection measures.
