The overhanging tongue of the Trift Glacier presents a potential threat to people on and in the vicinity of the Trift Lake because it could detach from the upper part of the glacier and cause tidal waves in the lake. In order to foresee a possible ice avalanche, glacier velocities are now being permanently monitored with interferometric radar and feature tracking techniques on webcam images.
