After weeks of a steadily rising water level, the large glacial lake Faverges on the Plaine Morte glacier drained completely on the 1st and 2nd of august. Our webcam station captured the whole event, as approximately 1.5 mio cubic meters of water seemingly disappeared from the lake to later emerge below the glacier and flow down the Simme Valley.

The drainage rate and water level was closely monitored by our surveillance stations in order to ensure that local authorities were constantly informed about the latest happenings. The surpassing of predifined thresholds automatically generated prioritized SMS that were distributed via the Swisscom eAlarm System.
